This opaque gemstone, pronounced “Mal-ah-kite", with its luxuriant, striking patterns of light and dark green marbling, was discovered by the Egyptians six thousand years ago. It was mined from King Solomon mines and used in tomb paintings (ground into a powder) and in cosmetics (Cleopatra’s favourite), and used as a talisman against evil. Also used in paintings during the Renaissance period as a pigment for paint and dyes. It is believed that it was used in the green colours found in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel painting. Malachite was also popular during Victorian times as small pieces dangled from baby cribs and children’s beds to keep evil away and to induce a peaceful sleep.
