Current scientific consensus holds that tektites formed from the impact of meteorites on the Earth’s surface. Material from the Earth, melted on impact, was ejected into the atmosphere, then fell back to the surface and cooled into tektites. All tektites occur in the strewn fields of meteorite impacts, where the gems are literally strewn over the ground in a very wide area.
Tektites, due to being a product of extraterrestrial phenomena, are associated with worlds outside our own. They are believed to facilitate communication with otherworldly realms and encourage spiritual growth. In some traditional societies, tektites are worn to promote fertility for both men and women.
Tektites are named by the locations where they are found.
Australites, Darwinites, Queenstownites, Darwin Glass -greyish green to mostly black tektites found in Tasmania, Australia
Billitonite- brown found in Borneo, Indonesia
Georgianite- olive green, Georgia, USA
Indochinites - mostly black tektites found in South East Asia
Philippinites - black tektites, found in the Philippines
Moldavite - pale to dark green tektites found in Czechia, Moldavia
Ivorites - black tektites found in Ivory Coast
Many craters around the world have glass which formed from the heat of the impact. But, the Mount Darwin Crater has glass which is quite different. Instead of being a black glass it is a grayish green. It is found with folds and twists as well as masses the look like large drops. Darwin glass is truly one of the most interesting of the impact melt glasses available to collectors.
Tektite is a glass, which can shatter under heat or vibration, so it is best cleaned with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Dirt can be gently removed from any crevices with a soft brush. Do not use toothpaste, as that can scratch the glass surface of the tektite. Keep tektites in padded envelopes or boxes to prevent accidental breakage.
