The name "aventurine" is derived from the Italian word "a ventura," meaning "by chance," which refers to the stone's discovery. It is found in various locations worldwide, including India, Brazil, China, Russia, and several European countries. Aventurine is often mined from areas with granite or gneiss bedrock.

Aventurine is most commonly recognized for its characteristic shimmering or sparkling effect, known as aventurescence, which is caused by the presence of reflective mineral inclusions. The colour of aventurine can range from green to blue, red, brown, or peach, depending on the mineral inclusions. The green variety, often referred to as green aventurine, is the most popular. It has a glassy to waxy luster and is commonly used in jewelry, carvings, and other ornamental pieces.
