Turquoise is found in its natural state in places with dry climates around the world. It can be mined in the U.S., Mexico, Iran, Peru, Chile, China, and Tibet. While the characteristics of each stone are very similar, different mines produce slight variations of turquoise.

Colour is as variable as the mineral's other properties, ranging from white to a powder blue to a sky blue, and from a blue-green to a yellowish green. The blue is attributed to its copper content, while the green is usually attributed to its iron (aluminum) content.
