Double terminated, hexagonal Herkimer Diamonds have a very interesting history. Most quartz crystals grow, over the course of millions of years, attached to a matrix (the surrounding rock or stone). So in those formations only one end of the quartz crystal grows to its point. Herkimer Diamonds formed inside pockets that were formed from decaying organic materials left from an ocean that disappeared. These pockets of gas allowed the crystal, freed from the surrounding matrix stone, to grow points on both ends. Herkimers formed about 500 million years ago, caught under the weight of glaciers. Now, freed from the ice, they pop up, to the Earth’s surface to be picked up without the use of tools.

Herkimer Diamonds get their name from the area where they were first found, the County of Herkimer, in the State of New York, in the USA. Due to the New York State laws, that limit mining in the area, Herkimer Diamonds are not commercially mined. The value, of Herkimer Diamonds, is determined by their size and how clear they are.

Short and stubby, doubled terminated, naturally formed with 18 facets, and usually clear, Herkimer Diamonds range in size from a few millimetres to a few centimetres. The larger and more translucent pieces are worth more to a collector or jeweller, than the smaller opaque specimens. Some Herkimer Diamonds contain enhydro inclusions of water, making them even more desired by collectors. Since their discovery, in the late 18th century, Herkimer Diamonds have been found elsewhere, but they do not have the same hardness or high gloss of those found in the original area. 

Herkimer Diamonds are desired by the energy workers of the world, as they vibrate at high frequencies that emits a powerful spiritual energy. They make excellent healing crystals and are used to “grid" a Reiki table or chair, or simply placed on or underneath the table.

Small but powerful, the Herkimer Diamond is an "attunement stone," useful for attuning healing energy to another person, group or the environment. For energy attunements, the teacher should have a Master Diamond, (a bigger Diamond programmed and dedicated for attunements), which she/he places under the chair of the student, along with a smaller Diamond, for the process. After the attunement, the teacher presents the Diamond to the student, creating an "energy link” between teacher and student. Herkimer Diamonds have a crystal memory, accepting and retaining information which can be retrieved at a later time. They may also be programmed with thoughts of love, well-being, or healing for others to draw on. The teacher can use the Master Diamond to implant these programs into the student Diamonds.
