Vanadinite Specimen

Vanadinite is a striking lead chlorovanadate mineral prized for its vivid red to orange hexagonal crystals. It most commonly forms as sharply defined hexagonal prisms, often with flat or slightly domed terminations, growing in clusters on a contrasting matrix.

The most notable and collectible specimens originate from the Mibladen mining district in Morocco, a locality renowned for producing exceptionally bright, well-formed crystals.

Mineral Characteristics

  • Crystal System: Hexagonal
  • Typical Color: Bright red, orange-red, deep crimson, occasionally brownish-red
  • Luster: Resinous to sub-adamantine
  • Transparency: Transparent to translucent
  • Habit: Short hexagonal prisms, often in dense clusters

Collector Appeal

High-quality vanadinite specimens are valued for:

  • Intense, saturated red or orange coloration
  • Sharp, well-defined hexagonal crystal faces
  • Minimal edge damage or contact points
  • Strong contrast between crystals and matrix (often white barite or pale limestone)
  • Balanced, aesthetic crystal coverage

Larger cabinet specimens with vivid color and pristine terminations are less common and highly sought after by mineral collectors.

Additional Notes

Due to its lead content, vanadinite should be handled with care. It is best suited as a display specimen rather than a handling stone. Washing hands after handling is recommended, and it should be kept away from children and pets.

Vanadinite remains one of the most visually dramatic small cabinet minerals, admired for both its geometric perfection and intense coloration.
