Malachite Chip Bracelet

Made from tumbled Malachite chips beaded onto a stretch bracelet.  

This opaque gemstone, pronounced “Mal-ah-kite", with its luxuriant, striking patterns of light and dark green marbling, was discovered by the Egyptians six thousand years ago. It was mined from King Solomon mines and used in tomb paintings (ground into a powder) and in cosmetics (Cleopatra’s favourite), and used as a talisman against evil. Also used in paintings during the Renaissance period as a pigment for paint and dyes. It is believed that it was used in the green colours found in Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel painting. Malachite was also popular during Victorian times as small pieces dangled from baby cribs and children’s beds to keep evil away and to induce a peaceful sleep.

Formed through the weathering of copper minerals, malachite is found in various locations globally. Notable sources include Russia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Namibia, Mexico, Australia, France, and the United States, particularly in Arizona and New Mexico. This distinctive green gem has been cherished for centuries for its vibrant color and unique banding patterns.

Renowned for its striking green hues, malachite exhibits a spectrum ranging from light to intense shades. This mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic system, often forming prismatic crystals but more commonly presenting in massive or botryoidal forms. Its most distinctive feature is the intricate banding or concentric rings that create captivating patterns within the stone. Polished malachite displays a vitreous to adamantine luster, giving it a reflective surface. With its association with positive transformation and protective energies, malachite is not only prized for its visual allure but also for its metaphysical properties.
