Raw Black Obsidian, also known as Dragons' Glass, is a naturally occurring volcano glass formed during eruptions when the lava cools rapidly. It is black to blackish green, smooth and glassy. Black Obsidian could be fashioned into many tools, and its’ uses dates back to the Stone Age when it was utilized for arrowheads, spear points, knives, axe heads, scrapers and other various cutting instruments. Ancient carved status made from Obsidian have been found. Throughout history, Obsidian was used for everything from food preparation to tattooing and magic. Native American cultures utilized Obsidian to sharpen their inner sight during spiritual ceremonies.  

Black Obsidian has been used in divination, in the form of Black Mirrors, as far back as the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Even Ancient Greek civilizations used Obsidian Spheres and flat mirrors for scrying. These are still in use today, for divination, and in Witchcraft and Wicca, Shamanism, and Paganism. Larger mirrors have been used for conduits for supernatural forces, a way to communicate with the otherworld entities, and for portals to other realms. One is said to be able to see all that is transpiring in the heavens and the earth with a Black Mirror. 

Black Obsidian’s vibrations are grounding and protecting. Shielding against unwanted energies, it makes a great talisman. Many cultures wore Obsidian for this purpose. Obsidian allows one to look inwards for causes of dis-ease or for deep healing.
