Howlite, Raw

Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral that forms in boron-rich deposits. It was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the late 19th century by Henry How, the mineralogist after whom it is named. Today, howlite is primarily found in locations such as Canada, the United States (particularly California), Mexico, Germany, and Russia.

Howlite typically occurs in nodular masses with a white to gray coloration, although it can also be found in translucent to opaque crystals. Its appearance is characterized by its soft, chalk-like texture and porous structure, which makes it ideal for dyeing. Due to its porous nature, howlite readily absorbs dyes, allowing it to be easily colored to resemble other gemstones such as turquoise or lapis lazuli. In its natural state, howlite often exhibits irregular veins or markings of gray or black, creating distinctive patterns within the stone.
