From a historical viewpoint, Opals were first discovered in Ethiopia around 4000 BC, so about 6000 years ago. The mining of Opals took off around 1880, once their value was recognized. The name is from ancient Greek and Latin languages, which both mean “to perceive a colour change”. The oldest Opal relic was found in a cave in Kenya, this is how it was dated.
