Soapstone, also called Steatite, is a soft gemstone, rich in talc, also containing serpentine and either Magnetite, Dolomite or Calcite. Its colour is a lighter shade of greens, greys, browns and white.  It gets its name because of its softness and "soapy" feel. Soapstone has been in use for thousands of years by Native Americans for traditional carvings. In the 19th century, soapstone was used for grave markers in Georgia and Ohio. Today, Soapstone is used to make kitchen countertops and sinks because of its nonporous and nonabsorbent material.
