Black Obsidian Sterling Silver Pendant

Black obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that forms when molten lava cools rapidly without sufficient time for crystal growth. Black obsidian typically has a shiny, glassy appearance with a jet-black coloration. Its surface can range from smooth to slightly rough, depending on factors such as the speed of cooling and any subsequent weathering or polishing.

Due to its dark color and lustrous sheen, black obsidian is often used for making jewelry, decorative objects, and ritual tools.

Black obsidian forms during volcanic eruptions when lava high in silica content cools rapidly upon reaching the Earth's surface. This rapid cooling prevents the growth of crystals, resulting in the formation of an amorphous solid, which is obsidian. Obsidian is commonly found in regions with recent or ongoing volcanic activity, such as areas along the edges of tectonic plates or volcanic hotspots.

Some notable sources of black obsidian include regions like the western United States (such as the Yellowstone National Park area), Mexico (especially in regions like the Sierra Madre Occidental), Iceland, Japan, and parts of South America.
