Cinnabar is a mineral primarily composed of mercury sulfide. Its name comes from the Greek word "kinnabari," referring to the red color of the mineral.

Cinnabar is typically found in hydrothermal veins near volcanic regions where hot, mineral-rich fluids circulate. Major deposits of cinnabar have been found in Spain, Italy, China, Mexico, and the United States.

In terms of appearance, cinnabar is known for its vibrant red color, ranging from deep scarlet to bright vermilion. It often forms as tabular or prismatic crystals, although massive and granular forms are also common. Cinnabar has a resinous to adamantine luster and may exhibit translucent to opaque transparency. Due to its' mercury content, Cinnabar should not be handled when not polished.
