Howlite is a borate mineral that was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1868 by geologist and chemist Henry How. It is often found in borate deposits associated with evaporite minerals. While its discovery occurred in Canada, howlite is also found in locations such as the United States, Mexico, Germany, Russia, and Turkey.
Howlite is typically white or colorless, and it is known for its distinctive veining patterns that can resemble those of natural turquoise. The veining is often gray to black, creating a marbled or spider-web appearance on the surface of the stone. The patterns are a result of the mineral inclusions or impurities, primarily manganese oxide.
Howlite is commonly used as a substitute for other more expensive white gemstones. It is porous and can be easily dyed to resemble other minerals, making it a popular choice in the production of beads, cabochons, and other jewelry components. Its natural appearance, especially when polished, is appreciated for its unique and attractive patterns.
In terms of metaphysical beliefs, howlite is thought by some to have calming properties, aiding in reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
