Prehnite is a mineral that is typically found in basalt or sedimentary rocks. 
Prehnite was first discovered in 1788 in the Karoo dolerites of South Africa and was named after Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, a Dutch military officer who served as the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony. It can also be found in other regions around the world, including Australia, China, Germany, Scotland, and the United States. Prehnite often occurs in association with other minerals such as calcite, apophyllite, and zeolites.

Prehnite is known for its distinct light green to yellow-green color, although it can sometimes appear colorless, white, gray, or even pink due to impurities. It typically forms as botryoidal aggregates, nodules, or crusts, and occasionally as well-formed crystals in the orthorhombic crystal system. The crystals may be prismatic or tabular, often with a vitreous to pearly luster.

One of the notable features of prehnite is its transparency or translucency, which allows light to pass through the mineral, giving it a soft, ethereal appearance. It often exhibits a waxy or greasy feel, particularly in massive or botryoidal forms.

Prehnite is also known for its characteristic "turtleback" pattern, which refers to the rounded, concentric layers or nodules that resemble the shell of a turtle. This pattern is especially prominent in some botryoidal specimens.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, prehnite is valued for its metaphysical properties and is believed to have calming and protective energies. It is often used in jewelry, carvings, and as a decorative stone in both its polished and natural forms.
